TRICKS OF THE TRADESHOW
by Stephen D. Ducoff, former BCA Executive Director
As published in SportsTravel Magazine, March 2005

Leaders in many sports have discovered first-hand the value that a well-run tradeshow can provide in building a sport. Nowhere is this more evident than at the annual International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo, which has grown over the past two decades into one of the most important yearly events for organizers, suppliers and many event athletes in the billiards industry.

The event – hosted by the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) and known throughout the industry as "The Expo" – is comprehensive, combining business seminars, continuing education instructor programs, the annual BCA membership meeting, board of director elections and meetings and the main attraction — three days of open "floor time" in which buyers and sellers mix, mingle and negotiate over all things billiards. What they're saying about the BCA ...

“At Amsterdam Billiards we have always felt that being a member of the BCA is crucial to running a successful pool room. It keeps us up to date on what is happening in our industry, it provides us with important business contacts within the industry, and it provides us with valuable discounts, particularly at the annual trade show.” Greg Hunt - Amsterdam Billiard Club, New York, New York

“I can’t imagine not wanting to be part of the industry’s only National Trade Organization. What better way to get involved and make things happen that affect your business. The BCA has been an invaluable asset for Tweeten Fibre Company. I like the direction and the focus of the association. Let’s face it, we are a small industry and the BCA allows everyone to be heard.” Skip Nemecek - Tweeten Fibre Company, Chicago, Illinois

“There are a lot of great things happening in billiards these days such as the Back to Billiard Expo, the tournaments put on by Mr. Trudeau and all the publicity being generated in the general media. Billiards looks to be on the verge of a big expansion!” Jim McDermott - Magoo’s Billiards, Tulsa, Oklahoma

“I feel very strongly about the BCA as a trade organization and its efforts to grow the industry.” Clay Etheridge - Showcase Billiards Westminster, Colorado

“The American Poolplayers Association (APA) continues to be a full voting member of the BCA because we feel that as our industry’s trade organization, there are many ways they can help the entire industry achieve its goals. We value the opportunity to participate in their annual trade show and find the business seminars enriching. We’ve also found the “52 Ways” booklets and the Billiard Creative Agency to be outstanding benefits of membership.” Reneé Poehlman - APA, Lake St. Louis, Missouri

“In addition to all the trade shows, tournaments, brochures, flyers, special discount programs, etc., the BCA does for its members, it is the unseen work that benefits the billiard industry the most. The work done to promote billiards and grow the sport is huge. The BCA is committed to make billiards a household sport for years to come and if I was someone in the industry who wanted to help secure my future, I definitely would want to be part of the group that is paving the way for billiards for years to come.” Mike Baggett - Cue & Case Sales, St. Augustine, Florida

“How can anyone that is in the Billiard Industry NOT belong to the BCA and feel they are in touch with the industry and getting the most out of it?” John Nusser - J-S Sales Company, Inc., Elmsford, New York
