MEMBER MARKETING 101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game"

TIP № 2

Advertise in movie theaters to reach a local audience that values entertainment

STRATEGY:

Advertising in movie theaters before the film starts is a great way to drive traffic directly to your business. The commercials can be either live action or still photography, and are relatively inexpensive to produce and run. It’s an effective way to promote your business to hundreds of people in your neighborhood.

EXECUTION:

  • Contact a local movie theater for on-screen advertising information.
  • Ask if the theater considers cross-promotions, or a discount on advertising in exchange for offering customers a free game of pool or a free gift/discount on a purchase when they show their ticket stubs.
  • Consider a two-part Q&A commercial with a pool-related question (i.e., Q? Who wrote the books that inspired The Hustler and The Color of Money? A: Walter Tevis, inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1991).
  • Emphasize that pool is a great activity for the whole group after the movie.
  • Include your address or directions from the movie theater.

 :: LEAGUE NUMBERS SHOW PROMISE

Despite SGMA findings ... that showed a slight decline in public participation numbers in the last reporting period, a quick poll of BCA Member League administrators found a high-level of interest and growth across the board. When we asked about league activity in 2005, these comments were unanimously upbeat:

From American Cue Sports: [We] enjoyed a substantial increase (40%) in player numbers at our 2nd ACS National 9-Ball Championships in November, 2005, and are projecting a similar increase for our 2006 ACS National 8-Ball Championships in June. Local league sizes have remained steady, and the ACS is taking the strategy of increasing benefits to its members each year without increasing member costs.John Lewis

From American PoolPlayers Association: APA membership for year-end ’05 was 259,117 versus 252,123 in ‘04 (an increase of 6,994 members). At our National Team Championships in August we had an increase of 44 teams overall in our three largest events (1,015 in ’05 versus 971 in ’04). — Jason Bowman

From BCA Pool Leagues: [Our second] Nine Ball Championship in October 2005 enjoyed a 52% increase in bodies and a 79% increase in entries with over 500 bodies and over 700 entries! We are projecting a 12 to 15% increase in players at the 2006 8 Ball Championships as we are adding over $90,000 to the prize fund, up over $30,000 from 2005. Our league has also shown substantial growth, with a 12% increase in overall membership. — Phil Bohanon

:: BCA NOTES & NEWS BRIEFS
PLATOON NEEDS CUES!

In an email from a solder serving in the 4th Infantry Division out of Ft. Hood, Texas, the BCA recently learned of a cue shortage. PFC Adam Orlowski reported:

We are sitting over in the country of Qatar suppporting our division and all of its assets ... and the only form of relaxation we have are some pool tables — which is outstanding, since we all love to play pool!

The only problem is that all they have here are house cues that have been through many tough days. Most of them are in a severe state of disrepair, split, have missing tips, or just altogether broken.

We are scheduled to try to have a post-wide pool tournament by the end of February, so all of us in 4th ID hub platoon look forward to some fair play with good cues!

BCA members that can do so are invited to donate cues and care accessories to support these soldiers in their off hours. Your generousity would be greatly appreciated by this platoon!
