In August, get ready for Ballbusters – The Ultimate Pool Party ... This major public relations event will be funded by the BCA, and supported by industry sponsors, at the Back to Billiards Preseason Kickoff for Everything Billiards — on Saturday, August 12, in Baltimore Maryland.

Designed to generate excitement about billiards and create multiple regional and national media placements, the event will take place from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. in Hall D of the Baltimore Convention Center.

Targeted to males, age 18-45, the "Ballbusters" event will be promoted in a trendy, youthful and edgy style, with DJ'd music and staged in an area replicating an upscale sports/billiard room. Here's what's in store, so far:

  • EnjoyPool.com Battle of the BCA Champions. As the centerpiece of the Ballbusters event, 12 top billiard pros, in four three-person teams, will compete in a single-elimination 8-Ball format. The two semi-finals and one finals match will be taped for broadcast on ESPN. Sponsor bids due 05/22.
  • Guinness World Record Attempt: An exhibition by World Record holder Dave Pearson will set up a speed event in which he will attempt to break his own record of potting 15 balls on two side-by-side tables.
  • Pro Challenges, Autographs and Photos: Guests will have the opportunity to get “up close and personal” with all of the billiard professionals for challenges, autographs and photos.
  • Speed Break Contest: Guests will compete for prizes as they show off their strength and speed. Special bonus prizes for sinking the 9-Ball.
  • Trick Shot Exhibitions: World Champion trick shot artists will amaze the crowds with their skill and showmanship.
  • Mini-Clinics: BCA Instructors will provide short instructional sessions on a variety of topics for both beginning and advanced players.
  • Novelty Billiards: Several tables will be devoted to non-traditional billiard games and formats. Video and arcade games (foosball, shuffleboard, air hockey, etc.) will also be available for play.
  • American Academy of Cue Art: A special display of one-of-a-kind custom cue art, ranging in value from $1,000 to $100,000 will be on display for public viewing.
  • Promotional Give-Away: T-shirts will be given away to the first 500 guests, along with door prizes from sponsors.

MEMBER MARKETING 101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game"

TIP № 51

Advertise in school newspapers and yearbooks to reach teens and families

STRATEGY:

School newspapers and yearbooks are an affordable way to reach teens and families in a targeted area. At the same time, your ad demonstrates your support for the high school, which creates goodwill in the community.

EXECUTION:

  • Contact school newspapers and yearbook clubs for advertising information
  • When advertising in the yearbook, the ad should communicate your support for the high school (and promote your “after graduation” party!)
  • In newspapers, promote different events throughout the year, such as post-football game festivities, spring break specials or school club fund-raisers
  • Newspaper ads should also include coupons for discounts on table time or purchases

:: ANCHORS AND CUE BALLS AWEIGH

BCA Certified Instructor Kevin Fort ... took to the high seas aboard the Radiance of the Seas cruise liner in April, as its shipboard billiard expert. Taking advantage of the Royal Caribbean Lines enrichment program, Kevin and his wife were treated to a fantastic "working vacation" with great accomodations, fine food and a captive audience.

In his first few hours onboard, Kevin was interviewed by the cruise director and videotaped doing a trick shot. That "commercial" began running on the ship's info channel right away and by the next morning he was being greeted in the hall and elevators with “Hi, you’re the pool expert!” In response, he graciously steered them toward the pool room and its two full-sized self-leveling tables. Priced at $90,000 for the pair, the tables feature computer guided optics and a gyro to keep them level as the ship moves.

During the three days at sea, Fort shared his knowledge by giving afternoon instruction and running a nightly tournament. His “Beginner Billiards Lessons” on day one drew 25 people, from 14 to 60 years old, followed by a trick shot demo for 40 on the second day and some advanced instruction to cap the series. Royal Caribbean supplied prizes for the evening tournaments and everyone had a good time. All in all, a great way to earn a trip!

An accomplished player and instructor with twenty years experience in pocket billiards, Kevin works as a security sales representative for a national company and has worked as a design engineer, cost estimator, and sales engineer. [ send an email ]

Obelisk Billiard Club Changes Hands ...
In an email notice dated May 1, Wendy Smith reported that Virginia's Obelisk Billiard Club is under new ownership. It read:

After seventeen years of owning and operating the Obelisk Billiard Club, Wendy and Herb Smith have decided to exit the business and pursue other interests. They leave behind an upscale pocket billiard and restaurant venue that has been rated as one of the top ten in the country.

To all those who have become friends as well as loyal patrons, we thank you and know that we have appreciated your business.

George and Mary Tucker and Donald and Cathy Dale have purchased the OBC, Inc. and have engaged long time patrons, Kevin Martin and James Moren, to manage the day-to-day operations.

Founded in 1989, the Obelisk Billiard Club has been well-run, building its credibility in the community where ladies and gentlemen can dine and/or play pocket billiards in a clean, well maintained facility.

The Smiths have every confidence that the new owners and their management team will continue to operate the Obelisk Billiard Club in a professional and business-like manner.
