ULTIMATE POOL PARTY
AIRS THIS SUNDAY
ON ESPN @ 2:00 PM EASTERN

::  JOHNSON DIGS IN AT NATIONAL OFFICE ... New CEO Rob Johnson began his first week on the job after the long Labor Day weekend, and didn't waste a moment getting his feet wet. Just 48 hours in, Johnson penned this greeting for Member Update:

Well, with less than a week on the job, I’m pleased to report billiard industry overload! I’ve jumped headfirst into my new position – and I love it. My initial impressions: this is a terrific industry with many wonderful, passionate people.

To give you a little idea into my game plan, my commitment is to get up to speed on the BCA and billiards industry as quickly as possible. As such, I’m beginning a six-week travel schedule that will allow me to meet every member of the board of directors and many of our key vendors.

After the whirlwind tour, I will begin to draft a strategic plan for the BCA that sets the vision for the organization in the near and long term. Rest assured this plan will not be done by me alone but will be a reflection of much thought and work by members of the BCA.

All I can say is - hope for good weather and on-time air travel. It’s going to be a wild few months!

Regards — Rob Johnson, CEO

MEMBER MARKETING 101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game"

TIP № 45

Gain visibility by supplying department stores with pool products for their displays.

STRATEGY:

The more people are exposed to pool, the more likely they’ll consider it the next time they’re looking for entertainment. By providing busy department stores with pool props, you make pool—and your store—more visible. And when you associate pool with a popular store or hip clothing, you shape the image of the game and of your business.

EXECUTION:

  • Contact display managers at specialty and department stores and offer to provide billiard props
  • Remind them that pool props can help draw more interest to displays; they’re colorful, hip and not over-used
  • Provide props in exchange for a sign on the display that advertises your store
  • Suggest a crosspromotion that offers a discount coupon (placed in a shopping bag or printed on the receipt) on your merchandise with a purchase from the store
  • Offer to display the retailer’s products or posters at your place of business

:: BCA MEMBER NEWS  :: BCA PROFILE

EXPRESS BILLIARDS.COM ... is the online retail storefront for BCA business member Betbeze Billiards in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In addition to its billiard line, the online storefront offers poker supplies, Table Tennis tables, Foosball, and Table Hockey tables.

The company recently issued its first e-newsletter to its customers in July. A second is in production, and an opt-in newsletter subscription page is under construction.

From the "about us" section, the company's stated goal is to bring the values of the small, community store to the online marketplace. Because Betbeze Billiards is a small family business, they strive to deliver an uncommon level of customer service, by making sure that customers are just as happy years from now as they are the day a table is delivered.

Mark Finkelstein ... took the morning train from Penn Station to Baltimore on August 12, then a quick taxi ride to the Baltimore convention center. It was a three hour trip each way, but he gave up his Saturday (and then some) to add his own brand of expertise to the volunteer instructor lineup at the BCA Ballbusters event.

Earlier in the year, Mark had attained "Advanced Instructor" status from the BCA, becoming one of only eleven certified clinicians to successfully complete the rigorous requirements of professionalism, coursework and a minimum of four years of field testing. In Baltimore, he became a valuable and welcome addition to the public promotional fair.

A relatively unknown player/instructor in the pool world, Mark has been playing pool for over fifty years. He played all through high school and college, then joined the Navy and played up and down the west coast. In San Francisco he studied with Bud Harris, National 3C Billiard Champion. In San Diego he competed weekly at College Billiards, along with Jay Swanson, Morro Paez and Keith McCready.

After retiring from the Navy and moving to New York City, he began teaching at Slate Plus's Pool School (formerly Chelsea Billiards) in 1992. He continued to study with the likes of Abe Rosen, George Mikula, Bert Kinister, and Randy Goettlicher, and served as the technical advisor on the movie "The Thing about my Folk's" with Peter Falk and Paul Reiser.

With a high run of 276 in straight pool, Finkelstein finished 32-48 in his most recent professional appearance, at the UPA World Summit of Pool. He still practices 2-3 hours every day, and teaches private students nearly seven days a week. You'll find him promoting pool in the NYC area - from corporate parties to bar mitzvahs - as well as anywhere that he might be able to support the BCA. Thanks! [ email ]
