:: THE COST OF DOING [ BILLIARD ] BUSINESS ... The October edition of Billiard Retailer heralds its first retailer survey with a special report entitled "A Numbers Game." For the feature piece, Executive Editor Alan E. Sanderfoot introduced six pages of pie charts and analysis covering issues from table displays and cue repair to advertising and the cost of health insurance.
Earlier in the year, Billiard Retailer ran ads urging dealers to complete a confidential online survey. From the usable surveys returned, a full range of Q&A data was compiled and summarized. In short:
"According to the survey, the typical billiard retailer has been in business for 23 years, operates one store location, employs eight full-time employees and one part-time employee ... The typical dealer carries three different table manufacturers and displays more than 20 tables ... carries six or more cue lines, displaying between 100 and 200 cues."
Citing that "knowledge is power" the feature goes on to provide some of the more detailed information needed to empower owners to make better and more profitable business decisions.
Billiard Retailer is the only business-to-business publication to offer a direct line of communication between manufacturers and distributors and their wholesale customers, and is the official business publication of the Billiard Congress of America. Published bi-monthly, the magazine is available free to qualified subscribers, and contains the BCA Break as a center insert. Find out more by calling Luby Publishing at 312-341-1110.

| :: NOTES FROM THE ROAD |
New BCA CEO Rob Johnson ... has logged some serious frequent flyer miles over the past several weeks, and he recently issued this personal "member update":
Hello from the road — Six states in two weeks and only one delayed flight! Between trips I thought I’d drop you a quick note to give you an update on my travels since beginning my new position just over four weeks ago.
I’ve had the opportunity to visit with board members in Colorado, Tennessee, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois and Missouri. These meetings have helped me to learn about the industry from the manufacturing, poolroom operator, league operator and distribution sides of the business. I’ve also met with our Expo partners – the Glasgows.
During each meeting I’ve asked a lot of questions and taken a lot of notes. It’s important for me to learn not only what is working in the industry but to also understand pending issues that may affect our membership’s ability to succeed. Board members have gone out of their way to answer every one of my questions (no matter how dumb) and to provide me with valuable background on the industry.
During the next few weeks I’ll be meeting with the rest of the board and continuing to study up on the business of billiards. As you can imagine, it’s been a lot to digest but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. This is a wonderful industry with many passionate, dedicated individuals.
As I conclude my travels I’ll begin working with the board to define a plan for next year. We will undertake a complete review of all the BCA's current programs and create a plan of attack for next year and beyond. Specifically, we will be working to make the Expo as beneficial for our membership as possible, looking at ways to add more value to our membership programs and reviewing all marketing and public relations programs to gauge their effectiveness and to brainstorm new ideas.
Here’s to continued sunny skies and good travels. Regards — Rob Johnson, BCA CEO |

MEMBER MARKETING
101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game" |
TIP № 15 |
Hold an open house for past customers to enhance their game rooms |
STRATEGY: |
Established customers can be a great source of future income. Since they’re already “sold” on billiards, the decision process is that much shorter. An open house not only gives them an opportunity to upgrade with new products, but also it demonstrates that you appreciate their business. And when you keep these customers happy, they’re likely to refer prospects to you. |
EXECUTION: |
- Compile a mailing list of your customers
- Create a personalized invitation — Provide incentives such as product discounts, trick shot exhibitions, door prizes and refreshments — Include product flyers
— Emphasize that this is a one-time event for valued customers only — Offer a discount for trade-ins (you can donate used tables and accessories)
- Have manufacturers’ reps on hand to demonstrate new products
- Follow up the mailing with a phone call to encourage attendance
- Reward attendees with small giveaways bearing your logo and address
