THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION …
of the Billiard Congress of America’s (BCA)
International Billiard & Home
Recreation Expo was truly a celebration of billiards. The event,
produced by the BCA, was held at the Charlotte Convention Center in
Charlotte, N.C., June 12 -14, 2008. Attendance for the three-day
event was 1,111. The number of companies exhibiting at the event was
178, while the total number of booths was 628.
|

The Charlotte Convention Center
played host to the Expo and offered attendees
20 hours of open floor time.
|
“Our theme, ‘Far From Conventional,’
was evident with our commitment to provide added value to all
attendees of the Expo while taking the overall Expo experience to a
new level,” commented Ivan Lee, co-chair of the Expo and 2007-2008
president of the BCA Board of Directors.
The keynote presentation by NASCAR
legend Kyle Petty, expanded Business of Billiards Seminar Series and
more than 20 hours of open floor time and 200,000+ square feet of
exhibit space in the Charlotte Convention Center provided the Expo
environment that the BCA membership has been seeking. Further, the
introduction of the
2008 GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships and the
2008 BCA Hall of Fame ceremony, as well as entertainment by
comedian Jake Johannsen afforded additional industry recognition and
networking opportunities in a fun environment.
|

This
year’s
Business of Billiards Seminar Series featured six unique
sessions designed to provide attendees with ideas
to improve and grow their businesses. |
“While we would have liked to have a
larger show with respect to exhibitors and attendees, we are not
surprised with the results given the difficult economy our members
are currently facing,” said Lee. “However, we believe those in
attendance benefited via the business opportunities and
relationships forged on the show floor and by participating in the
Business of Billiards seminars and special events. We look forward
to a stronger economy next year, as we return to Las Vegas for the
26th Annual International Billiard and Home Recreation Expo.”
The BCA has secured the Sands
Convention Center for the 2009 Expo, which will take place June
25-27, 2009, and the Las Vegas Convention Center, June 24-26, 2010.
The Expo will also be held in Las Vegas in 2011 and 2012, with the
dates and locations for those years still to be determined.

JONES AND PAN NEW 2008 GENERATIONPOOL.COM 9-BALL CHAMPIONS |
|
Jeremy
Jones and Xiaoting Pan … were recently crowned champs of
the
2008 GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships. The event, hosted
by the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), was held in conjunction
with the 2008 International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo at the
Charlotte Convention Center, June 8-12, 2008.

Jones and Xiaoting Pan (left) pose with Ga Young Kim and Ronnie
Wiseman. |
In the first final match, both of which were taped by ESPN, Jones
met Ronnie Wiseman to vie for the title. In the error-ridden set, it
seemed that both parties’ nerves were getting the better of them.
The score seesawed to 3 apiece — none of which was a run-out. After
a miss each on the 8-ball in the following rack, Wiseman made the 8,
but then scratched, moving Jones up a game. He also took the next
rack when Wiseman missed a straight-in 9-ball. After pushing out
after his next break, Jones capitalized on a failed safety attempt
by Wiseman and ran out to reach the hill 6-3. Wiseman broke next and
missed the 2, but so did Jones, so Wiseman narrowed the gap to two
racks; however, Jones broke and ran out the final rack to win 7-4.
The women’s final was actually a rematch of the fourth round, in
which Ga Young Kim sent Pan to the one-loss side 9-6. The women
seemed a little more settled than the men did, but still they
started off somewhat shakily. Kim reached a 3-1 advantage with a
strong break and run-out, but Pan tied it up when Kim scratched on
the 8-ball in the next rack and then won the following after Kim
left her a shot on the 2-ball. Now in her element, Pan broke and ran
out for the 4-3 lead. When Kim’s 7-ball ejected out of the pocket,
Pan moved another step closer in the short race to 7. Kim pushed out
on her next break, and Pan missed the 1-ball. Kim started to clear
the table, but she didn’t leave herself a good shot on the 8-ball
and tried to play safe. However, Pan had a shot and took it to reach
the hill. In the final rack, Pan pocketed three balls on the break
and cleared for her 7-4 win.

BCA 2008
HALL OF FAME INDUCTION HONORS TWO OF THE GAME’S
GREATS |
Allen Hopkins and Pat Fleming …
were inducted into the
Billiard Congress of America’s (BCA) Hall of Fame in a ceremony
on June 12, 2008, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte,
North Carolina. The event took place in the Grand Ballroom during
the intermission of the men’s and women’s final matches of the 2008
GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships.

Allen Hopkins (left) and Pat Fleming. |
Hopkins and
Fleming are the 52nd and 53rd industry figures inducted into the
BCA Hall of Fame, which was established in 1966. Hopkins, 56, a
two-time winner of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship, as well as
major events in 10-ball, straight pool and one-pocket, was inducted
into the Hall of Fame’s Greatest Players wing. Fleming, 59, owner of
Accu-Stats Video Productions, was enshrined in the Hall of Fame’s
Meritorious Service wing. With their inductions, there are 41
members of the Greatest Players wing, and 12 enshrined for
Meritorious Service.
The tribute to Hopkins and Fleming
was well attended by their peers, previous BCA Hall of Fame
inductees and members of their families. During the ceremony,
attendees were treated to video productions highlighting the
impressive careers of each inductee.
Hopkins played championship-level
pool for three decades, from the 1970s through the 1990s. He is
known for his versatility as a player, earning titles in such varied
events as the 1977 World Open 14.1 Straight Pool championship, the
1977 and 1981 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, the 1990 Cleveland
Open 10-Ball Classic and the 1991 Legends of One-Pocket event.
Although Fleming had a distinguished
career in straight pool in the 1970s and early 1980s, his best-known
contribution to cue sports is the creation and continuing
development of Accu-Stats Video Productions, based in Butler, New
Jersey. Since the mid-1980s, Accu-Stats has videotaped more than
1,000 tournament matches and preserved performances by the world’s
greatest pool and billiards players.

MEMBER MARKETING
101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game" |
|
TIP №
47 |
|
|
Highlight NEW products and drive
traffic with regular mailings. |
|
 |
|
|
|
STRATEGY: |
|
|
One of the most powerful
words in advertising is
“new.” With new-product
announcements, you keep
your business
top-of-mind with
customers and portray an
image of a pool resource
that’s on the cutting
edge. Best of all,
regular mailers give
customers a reason to
return to your store
again and again. |
|
|
|
|
EXECUTION: |
|
-
Design a simple and
consistent graphic format
that customers will identify
with your store.
-
On the front of the mailer,
include a teaser promising
something of value, or an
intriguing question to
entice recipients to read
more.
-
Write about the new product
line, emphasizing the
benefits to the customer.
-
Include photos or
illustrations to add
interest.
-
Extend a limited-time offer
to create a sense of
urgency.
