SEAN CUMMINGS, 2008-2009 BCA BOARD OF
DIRECTORS CHAIRMAN, … has announced his resignation from
Brunswick Billiards.
After 12 years of service with Brunswick Corporation, three years of
which with Brunswick Billiards, Cummings is leaving the industry for
a position with a privately held industrial products company in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a result of his departure, Cummings has
also resigned his position as chairman of the
BCA Board.
|

Sean Cummings |
“It is with much sadness that I
submit my resignation from the BCA Board of Directors,” said
Cummings. “I will certainly miss being a member of the BCA and the
broader billiards community. It was truly an honor for me to be
selected chairman of the organization. The Board and its membership
should be proud of their commitment to the betterment of the
industry.”
In light of Cummings’ resignation and
per the
BCA Bylaws, the first vice chairman shall complete the unexpired
term of the chairman. As such, the BCA announces that Ivan Lee,
of Iwan Simonis, will
serve as chairman until the next annual election of officers, which
is scheduled to take place in June 2009 during the
2009 International Billiard & Home
Recreation Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Sean will be missed by the BCA
Board, as well as the entire billiard industry,” notes Lee. “He is a
true gentleman that leads by example. I wish him all the best in his
new endeavors.”
|

Ivan Lee |
In addition, Kathy Vegh, of
Danny Vegh’s Billiards & Home,
will now serve in the capacity of first vice chairman. As chairman,
Lee was given the option to appoint from members of the current
Board a replacement for the now vacant position of second vice
chairman. As such, Eric Weber, of
CueStix International,
will now serve in that capacity. The BCA Board will also seek to
fill Cummings’ director term, which will expire in 2011.
“It has truly been a pleasure to work
with Sean and his presence in the industry will certainly be
missed,” said Rob Johnson, BCA CEO. “Sean is one of the rare
individuals with not only the ability to achieve great success in
business, but to do it while treating everyone with respect and
professionalism. These traits have enabled him to serve as a
respected advocate for the industry, Brunswick and the BCA. On
behalf of the BCA Board of Directors, I wish him much success in his
new position.”

BUSINESS TIP: MAXIMIZING
MARKETING BUDGETS IN A TIGHT ECONOMY |
|
Making the most of your marketing budget in
these times ... is critical. Traditional media advertising on
television, radio and in print is still an important staple of
larger advertising campaigns. When budgets don’t allow the size of
media-buy you need to make a real impact, it may be time to consider
shifting some of those marketing dollars to some more
non-traditional marketing tactics.
With many of your competitors facing the same
marketing budget constraints and with the holidays approaching,
direct consumer contact can be a great way to get an edge on the
competition, attract new customers and cultivate loyalty among
existing customers.
Discretionary
spending among younger consumers has not been dramatically impacted
by the economy; they continue to enjoy the same leisure activities
or entertainment they always have. Older consumers and those who are
feeling the squeeze of the economic slump are looking for bargains
or specials that allow them to save without making substantive
changes to their lifestyles.
So what does “non-traditional” tactics and direct
consumer contact mean? No matter the economic times, consumers still
have to go about their daily lives — they still have to go to
work and eat lunch, they’re still stopping for that morning cup of
coffee or meeting with friends and colleagues for happy-hour. As
such, the Internet continues to be a growing part of consumers’
daily lives and cell phones are always within reach. What does any
of this have to do with marketing or the tight budgets many are
under? They’re known as “intersect points” and they’re places or
mediums used to make direct contact with consumers. Consider this:
-
Street Marketing — Interacting
with consumers where they work and play. For years viewed as the
tactic of nightclubs, movies and record labels, street-marketing
has evolved to be a highly effective marketing vehicle for
everything from consumer goods and services to sporting goods,
healthcare, financial services and everything in between.
-
Online Marketing — Driving Web
traffic and building community around your brand. Whether you’re
using the Web to drive sales or simply to provide information
about your “brick and mortar” business, you need more than just
a “presence,” you have to have a “purpose.” Once you’ve got the
right Web site, you have to drive traffic and that can often
mean getting creative, including viral games and videos to
branded blogs. With the explosive growth of social networking
sites like Facebook and MySpace, the opportunity to build
loyalty around your brand, attract new customers and promote any
special offerings is just a click-away.
-
Mobile Marketing — Direct-mail
modernized and gone interactive. Few consumers go without their
cell phone and these days those devices are a lot more than a
telephone. From corporate execs with their Blackberry to younger
consumers with their iPhone, mobile devices are a part of life
and they can be your direct contact point with consumers.

MEMBER MARKETING
101 ... From "52 Ways to Make Pool Everybody's Game" |
|
TIP №
48 |
|
|
Create
goodwill by making donations to
local charities for each
purchase or game played. |
|
 |
|
|
|
STRATEGY: |
|
|
When you support the
community, people will
support you. Offer to
donate a portion of the
purchase price or
service charge to a
local charity, such as a
food shelter or a
computer drive for local
schools. It helps
reinforce the purchase
decision. And it makes
people feel good about
supporting your
business. |
|
|
|
|
EXECUTION: |
|
-
Choose a local charity with
a broad appeal and have them
include the special offer in
their newsletters or flyers.
-
Determine what portion of
each purchase/service charge
you donate.
-
Submit a public service
announcement to radio and TV
stations.
-
Make it a limited-time offer
to create a sense of
urgency.
-
Provide customers with a
thank-you card outlining how
the donation will help the
local charity.
-
Talk to your accountant
about possible tax
deductions.

BCA SPOTLIGHT |
|
New
BCA Board member Karim Belhaj … is the CEO and
co-owner of The
Predator Group. Belhaj has been with the company for
more than 10 years, beginning his career with Predator as an
intern in 1997.
Prior to joining The Predator Group in
1997, Belhaj worked in his parent’s small chain of retail
businesses where they sold mid to high-end European clothing
throughout Paris and the French Riviera. From there Belhaj
attended college in France to study international business
and received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the
University of North Florida. College is where Belhaj first
became involved with billiards. “Pool first caught my
attention when I was 18 and I was addicted to the sport by
19 — playing at least five hours a day,” he says. “I
was already co-managing pool events and selling Predator
products around the country while in college in France.”
Belhaj’s notes that his involvement with
the BCA Board of Directors is due to the opportunity to be a
part of a team comprised of industry leaders aligned with
various initiatives as a way to supercharge the sport.
“So
far, I have attended two Board meetings and I am pleased to
see than the Board of Directors is progressive while staying
true to the foundation of billiards as a sport,” says Belhaj.
“The BCA Board of Directors is meant to guide the
organization by collaborating knowledge and experience in
the industry and helping weather hard economic times. I am
planning to apply my expertise gained from 11 years with The
Predator Group to co-lead the review and update the
strategic plan. Times are tough; therefore, we need a clear
roadmap to prevail in the coming years.”
When Belhaj is not working, he enjoys
studying different aspects of business in various cultures
while traveling the world, and takes every opportunity to
discover new cultures. He also is currently preparing for
his first marathon. Most of all, he enjoys a homemade dinner
and excellent wine with friends and family. |

WOMEN'S PRO BILLIARD TOUR
ANNOUNCES HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES |
|
The
Women’s Professional Billiard
Association (WPBA) recently inducted ... Ewa Mataya Laurance
and Loree Jon Hasson to its Hall of Fame in the “Greatest
Player” category. The event took place November 12, 2008, at the
WPBA annual awards banquet at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
in Hollywood, Florida.
The Hall of Fame committee, made up of existing
WPBA Hall of Fame members Belinda Campos Calhoun, Vicki Paski and
Shari Stauch, submitted candidates to be voted on by the association
membership in October. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of
Laurance and Hasson.
|

Ewa Mataya Laurance |
Laurance is one of the most visible
superstars in the history of pocket billiards. Known as The Striking
Viking, she took the billiard world by storm when she moved to the
United States from her native Sweden at age 17. She is the reigning
International and World Cup Trick Shot Champion, holds multiple
World and U.S. Open 9-ball titles, has won the Swedish, European and
WPBA National Championships and is a two-time Player of the Year.
Former #1 ranked player in the world, Laurance has been named WPBA
Sportsperson of the Year, BBIA Industry Service Award inductee and
in 2004 was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of
Fame. She also made a historic appearance on the cover of the New
York Times Magazine and has been featured in numerous national
publications.
When not competing, Laurance serves as an ESPN
color commentator. She also co-hosted GSN’s popular game show, “Ball
Breakers.” She serves on the Board of Trustees of the Billiard
Education Foundation and the South Carolina chapter of the
Make-A-Wish Foundation, and is a columnist for Pool & Billiard
Magazine. On tour, Laurance is sponsored by Brunswick Billiards.
|

Loree Jon
Hasson |
Hasson began playing pool at age four,
quickly attracting worldwide attention. She performed her first
billiard exhibition at age seven for the Children’s Heart Fund
Association with the legendary Minnesota Fats. She won her first
World Championship at age 15, a feat recorded in the Guinness World
Book of Records as the youngest pocket billiard champion ever.
Today, Hasson holds over 50 major titles,
including eight World, three U.S. Open and three WPBA National
Championships. She was selected as Player of the Year on five
separate occasions. In 2002, she was inducted into the Billiard
Congress of America Hall of Fame. She has frequently appeared on
multiple national television programs and was selected in 1995 as
one of Esquire Magazine’s “Women We Love Most.” Hasson is
also an instruction columnist for Pool & Billiard Magazine.
