Billiards has had a profound impact on my life, manifesting
itself through my grandmother to shape me into the person that I
am today. My grandmother has always been one of my role models;
I was very close to her and I have developed many of my personal
qualities based on what she has taught me. [

Billiards set the stage for who I am today. Yes, I was a fairly
awkward youth. I had been ill with undiagnosed food allergies
that left me uncoordinated compared to the other kids my age.
Often, I plowed ahead, simply because I did not know what else
to do. Then I discovered billiards. [

The first thing I saw when I walked
through the door of my house was a billiards table. Dad and Mom had
bought it when they were just a young couple (a man had a pet snake that
got stuck in there and gave it to my parents as a gift for getting the
boa out) and it stayed in the main entry way of my house through their
marriage, my birth, and a whole lot of life. [

Beginning as a mere hobby in my neighbor’s basement, billiards
has become a surprisingly integral part of my life. Though
sometimes viewed as a seedy barroom game, I feel that pool is a
social gem that is a very appropriate activity for a teenager to
be involved in. Billiards has had a very positive influence on
me mentally, physically, and socially. [

The
colored orbs dance, glide, and spin across the green felt, much
like we go through our lives on this green earth. Sometimes we
sink ‘em, and other times we scratch, and every now and again we
take that tricky jump or behind the back shot. But through it
all we never break a sweat. [

My mom played pool when she was younger, but stopped when she
had me. After several years of single parenting and concerned
that my group of friends and I have something to do, mom put a
pool table in the basement. [

Billiards
has always been a huge part of my life. Even before I was born,
I was taking road trips with my parents to pool tournaments. My
parents have over 60 years combined between them as
professionals in the billiard industry. I spent much of my time
as a child around the greatest pool players in the world. [

Two
years ago, a green-top and oak-legged table was where I met a
good friend named Edgar. Edgar is a senior citizen at the Warm
Friend assisted-living center in downtown Holland, Michigan. For
years Edgar had known socializing as an activity centered on the
building’s pool table in the cold, damp basement. [
